Is Life Beyond Earth For Real? Living Possibilities On Other Planets

If you ask if life beyond earth or on other planets and moons exist? They will usually answer with a confident “yes!” A variety of good and bad space invaders have presented themselves over the years, going back decades. We humans appear to have an almost instinctive belief, or is it a hope that we are not alone in the world. Therefore, their presence permeates our entertainment and society.
Though, the interstellar presence that is frequently on trending is undoubtedly a myth. There has never been any discovery of life outside of Earth. In addition, there is no proof that space life has ever come to Earth. It is all fiction.
However, this does not imply that there is no life elsewhere in the cosmos. Even though no definitive evidence of life ever found. The potential of interplanetary biology and the scientific reasoning behind it have become more and more likely. That is possibly the single greatest accomplishment in the developing subject of astrobiology. Which is concerned with both the beginnings of life on Earth and the hunt for life elsewhere in the universe.
An enormous body of knowledge is built to analyze and explain the origins, characteristics, and potential spatial dimensions of life. Yet, this knowledge is gathered through
- Exploration and illumination of the world of extreme life on Earth
- Experiments on how life here began
- Knowledge of the chemical composition of the cosmos
- Testing for habitability on missions to Mars, Jupiter’s moon Europa, Saturn’s moon Titan, and beyond.
- Exploration and illumination of the world of extreme life beyond Earth.
Furthermore, if these findings are true and will continue to be true, unlike the ETs and starship invaders of popular culture, continue reading the article below.
Is There A Life Beyond Earth?
This question is still open, whether the answer lies somewhere in our solar system or farther afield among the exoplanets. Though, the solutions might be coming closer. And other recent findings appear to increase the likelihood of space life.
With the revelation of multiple fresh, tantalizing findings, September 2022 has been a fantastic example. These include fresh evidence for a wet and warm early Mars, with many more lakes than initially thought, an old ocean, super-Earth exoplanets that may be more habitable than Earth, and the ocean of Saturn’s moon Enceladus being more habitable than previously thought.
Is There A New Hope For Ocean Life On Enceladus?
Initially, Enceladus, a small moon of Saturn, believes to contain a subterranean ocean of liquid water, similar to Jupiter’s moon Europa. In 2018, a fresh examination of data from NASA’s Cassini mission identified some tantalizing components. It suggests the ocean on Enceladus as a viable habitat for life beyond earth. In Enceladus’ plumes, the 2018 investigation found water vapor, ice particles, salts, methane, and organic molecules. But phosphorus, a crucial component, was absent. The phosphorus is present, according to a recent study from scientists at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). Christopher Glein, a geochemist, stated on September 19, 2022:
In the years since NASA’s Cassini spacecraft visited the Saturn system, we have been repeatedly blown away by the discoveries made possible by the collected data. What we have learned is that [Enceladus’ plumes] contain almost all the basic requirements of life as we know it.
The SwRI team did not directly locate the phosphorus. However, they did find proof of its presence in the water underneath the frozen surface of the moon. Based on knowledge gained from Cassini’s observations of the ocean-seafloor system on Enceladus. They carried out thermodynamic and kinetic modeling that simulates the geochemistry of phosphorus. Also, the phosphate minerals should be unusually soluble in the water, according to their hypothesis. Glein continued:
The underlying geochemistry has an elegant simplicity that makes the presence of dissolved phosphorus inevitable, reaching levels close to or even higher than those in modern Earth’s seawater. What this means for astrobiology is that we can be more confident than before that the ocean of Enceladus is habitable.
Why A Phosphorus Mineral?
Cell membranes, bones, and teeth, as well as the DNA that contains life’s genetic information, all depend on it, as does the plankton microbiome in our terrestrial sea.
Are Super-Earths Better Places To Live Than Earth?
On September 23, 2022, astronomer Chris Impey published another fascinating essay at The Conversation. In it, he argues that super-Earths, exoplanets that are larger and more massive than Earth but smaller and less massive than Neptune, are. Further, they may not only be livable but also potentially life-sustaining. They might even be more livable than Earth itself.
Additionally, they are widespread, estimated to make up around one-third of all known exoplanets. As Impey put it:
Based on current projections, about a third of all exoplanets are super-Earths, making them the most common type of exoplanet in the Milky Way. The nearest is only six light-years away from Earth.
You might even say that our solar system is unusual since it does not have a planet with a mass between that of Earth and Neptune. Furthermore, certain super-Earths may be more habitable than Earth. Impey said:
Researchers have come up with a list of the attributes that make a planet very conducive to life beyond Earth. Larger planets are more likely to be geologically active, a feature that scientists think would promote biological evolution. So, the most habitable planet would have roughly twice the mass of the Earth and be between 20 percent and 30 percent larger by volume. It would also have oceans that are shallow enough for light to stimulate life all the way to the seafloor and an average temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius).
It would have an atmosphere thicker than the Earth’s that would act as an insulating blanket. Finally, such a planet would orbit a star older than the sun to give life longer to develop, and it would have a strong magnetic field that protects against cosmic radiation. Scientists think that these attributes combined will make a planet super habitable.
By definition, super-Earths have many of the attributes of a super habitable planet. To date, astronomers have discovered two dozen super-Earth exoplanets that are, if not the best of all possible worlds, theoretically more habitable than Earth.
Still, the Webb telescope will be able to examine some of these strange planets more closely. Besides, examine their atmospheres for potential chemical indications of life beyond earth, or biosignatures.

Can There Be A More Humid And Hotter Early Mars?
Scientists have argued over whether Mars was warmer and wetter a few billion years ago for many years. On the other hand, was it damp and chilly? Or perhaps cool and mainly dry?
The SETI Institute has released fresh proof that Mars had a thick atmosphere when it first formed. Because of this, warm oceans might have persisted for millions of years.
The scientists created the first-ever model of the evolution of the Martian atmosphere that connects the high temperatures. It is from Mars molten genesis to the production of the earliest oceans and atmospheres. Just like on Earth, the findings suggested that water vapor was concentrated in the lower atmosphere and condensed as clouds. Kaveh Pahlevan, a research scientist at the SETI Institute, said:
We believe we have modeled an overlooked chapter in Mars’s earliest history in the time immediately after the planet formed. To explain the data, the primordial Martian atmosphere must have been very dense (more than ~1000x as dense as the modern atmosphere) and composed primarily of molecular hydrogen (H2). This finding is significant because H2 is known to be a strong greenhouse gas in dense environments. This dense atmosphere would have produced a strong greenhouse effect, allowing very early warm-to-hot water oceans to be stable on the Martian surface for millions of years until H2 was gradually lost to space. For this reason, we infer that – at a time before the Earth itself had formed – Mars was born wet.
Are There Land of Lakes on Mars?
Researchers from Hong Kong also suggest a historically wetter Mars in a different study. According to the study, the number of lakes that originally existed on Mars has been overestimated. Geologist Joseph Michalski from the University of Hong Kong claims:
We know of approximately 500 ancient lakes deposited on Mars, but nearly all the lakes we know about are larger than 100 square kilometers. But on Earth, 70 percent of the lakes are smaller than this size, occurring in cold environments where glaciers have retreated. These small-sized lakes are difficult to identify on Mars by satellite remote sensing, but many small lakes probably did exist. It is likely that at least 70 percent of Martian lakes have yet to be discovered.
According to the new report, the majority of the Martian lakes that are already recognized date back between 3.5 and 4 billion years. Additionally, they might have only existed for 10,000–100,000 years. Due to the reduced gravity and fine-grained earth, some of them would have been rather muddy and murky.
For any purported photosynthetic species (using photosynthesis) in the lakes, that might have been a challenge. However, other lakes may have been deeper, longer lasting, and home to hydrothermal systems capable of sustaining life beyond earth, as Michalski pointed out.
Finding proof of these other smaller lakes will require more investigation. But if they did, that would reinforce the idea that life—even microscopic life—has existed on ancient Mars.
Are There Any More Proof That Mars Once Had An Ocean?
Finally, Space.com claimed additional proof of an old ocean on Mars discover by China’s Zhurong rover. Zhurong is investigating utopia Planitia’s ancient plains. Utopia Planitia is a large basin, and if Mars ever had an ocean, as some scientists claim, it was probably a part of it. Moreover, the rover has so far returned 1,480 terabytes of raw data, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA). Some of that information is in favor of the ocean theory.
The scientists report the discovery of hydrated minerals in the duricrust. Duricrust is a hard mineral layer that often develops on top of soil because of groundwater evaporation.
According to Space.com, the scientists said that there is proof of “substantial liquid water activity” in the area at some point during the previous billion years.
Zhurong has also discovered evidence in the soil for “high bearing strength and low friction parameters.” That may be a result of erosion brought on by the wind, water, or both.
An earlier PNAS investigation from January of last year also supports the idea that the northern hemisphere once had a circumpolar ocean.
Where will we first find life Beyond Earth?
Even though none of these recent discoveries provides evidence of extraterrestrial life. Yet, they do demonstrate that the likelihood of it is growing. Exoplanets, or planets that orbit other stars, have been counted at about 4,900 in our galaxy. Nevertheless, there are undoubtedly trillions more.
The idea of the “habitable zone” is one of the best resources scientists have to start focusing their search for habitable planets. It is the distance from a star at which temperatures would permit liquid water to occur on the surface of a planet. A steady star that is not prone to exploding in sterilizing flares would also be necessary. Along with a planet of the right size and atmosphere. Really, the habitable zone is only a way to narrow the field and focus on the planets most likely to have favorable circumstances for life beyond Earth.
